SPF=Saving the Porcelain & Fair.
Giada DiLaurentiis and Hugh Jackman have been raising skin cancer awareness for years, and have inspired a conversation…
Hello, my name is Nina. I’m a recovering TAN-a-holic. I spent many years going to tanning beds, laying out in the sun with baby oil, and convincing myself that wearing SPF made me “claustrophobic”, and make my face break out. I justified all of this telling myself that I have 100% Mediterranean skin, and that I was made to be in the sun.
Then two years a spot started growing on my chest plate. It would itch for
days weeks, and cortisone didn’t budge. Then morphed into an odd oval. Then would bleed after taking a shower. I freaked. Spoke to a few woman about it and they’d said it may be skin cancer. Still convincing myself there’s “no way possible”, I went to my dermatologist, just to see…
Sure enough, basal cell carcinoma. I freaked, again. Ok, maybe I do need to wear what they call SPF.
After having Mohs Surgery, it was my mission to find an SPF that I could have a “healthy relationship” with, that I wouldn’t be resentful towards, allow me to be me, I wouldn’t get bored with, and most that give me a sense of security.
Though I really enjoy the look fair skin, LOVE a summer glow, so the same search went for finding the best make up & self tanning product.
Face & Body Protection
Lets FACE It
My biggest concern with SPFs on the face is how oily it can become. By far, Skinceuticals Physical Matte UV Defense will leave no trace of any oiliness or tackiness on the skin. If you have sensitive skin, or you’re in & out of the pool/lake all day, Aveeno Baby Sunblock Stick is the ultimate- also apply around the lip line if you are prone to cold sores from the sun, the best!
Something for everyBODY
Neutregena’s Fresh Cooling Sunblock is so light on the skin you won’t feel it at all, plus the coolness it leaves your skin will make it tolerable when it’s a thousand degrees out (I don’t recommend it on the face, think I had small break out from the helioplex). And if you love (or miss) the laying out with a body oil, Supergoop makes an amazing sunblock oil and will give you the nostalgic fix of a suntan oil.
Make Up + Self Tanning
Be kind & MAKE UP
For “no make up” make up, Dr. Dennis Gross CC Cream is light in coverage, weight, and frangrance free so excellent for sensitive skin. If you prefer a matte finish, or have oily skin in general, Tarte Amazonian Clay‘s coverage & longevity is so good you won’t need a powder to set. If you’re looking for a light glow, Buxom’s weightless foundation will leave you with the perfect dewy finish & great sun protection. If you forget to put on self tanner and need a tan for you legs or arms last minute, LORAC Tantalizer body spray leaves you with a sexy, luminous golden glow to the skin.
No leather skin at this TANnery
Self tanners have come such a long way when it comes to performance & fragrance. If you’re able to get an airbrush tan, search for a salon that uses Fantasy Tan products. They have 5 formulas that are intermixable, giving you ultimate customization for your skin tone. If you prefer to self tan at home, St. Tropez Mousse has a blue/green base and helps neutralize any orange tones. If your skin is sensitive, Jergens Natural Glow for the face is light & won’t break out skin, plus is one of the only self tanners that has a built in SPF of 20!
